About the Button

This general staff officer's button was recovered from the grounds of Monmouth on February 13, 1994, by Jack Dale Shafferm of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.   The button backmark reads "*J. M. L. & W. H. Scovill* Waterbury/Extra Superfine."   This backmark dates the button as being manufactured no later than1840 by Scovill Button Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, Connecticut. The accompanying photograph of General Quitman shows him wearing a uniform adorned with identical buttons.   The photograph was taken in New Orleans in 1845, while the General was on his way to fight in the war with Mexico, where his heroic deeds made him famous.

General John A. Quitman
